The delegate surveys are in, the post-event reports are done and dusted, and we’ve just about managed to catch our breath! It’s hard to believe we are a full month on from ISLEXPO 2018. As we look back at the Isle of Man’s largest and most well-attended business event, we can’t help but throw up a hearty fist pump(!) in celebration of what came to be during this conference-festival hybrid focused on location, economic growth and real-time connection.

ISLEXPO 2018 in numbers

The local business community and a record-number of off-island delegates showed up in high-spirits at the Villa Marina on 16 May 2018. There was a buzz about the place from the very start and the numbers tell a similar story.

– 26 sponsors and partners secured by Revel across all industry from leading institutions and brands to emerging gaming and cryptocurrency companies and entrepreneurial and investor networks

– 34 individual events took place throughout the day during the action-packed programme

– 87% of surveyed delegates stated they intend to return to future ISLEXPO events

– Reporting shows a noticeable increase in the overall confidence concerning the future of the Island’s economy from surveyed delegates

Dynamic events programme

Each year we curate an intentionally varied programme of local and global industry leaders that speaks to everyone within the business community, creating a fascinating container for new ideas to emerge through thought-provoking content and serendipitous, cross-industry connection.

The event’s theme has progressed throughout the years from START in 2016, to GROW in 2017 and on to LOCATE in 2018 – exploring the Isle of Man as a unique destination to locate a business.

A mountain of wonderful memories came from this year’s event (see Twitter #ISLEXPO); however, in the name of concise content we’ve shortened the list to these fabulous highlights:

World-Class Speaker Line-up

Revel’s events have become known for their excellent speaker line-ups and ISLEXPO 2018 met all expectation as Dan Germain of Innocent kicked things off with an inspiring talk about the innovative brand’s journey from start-up to international drinks company and highlighted the authenticity it takes to find true success in today’s world.

A big hit with upcoming entrepreneurs and millennials, popular author, blogger and podcast host Emma Gannon shared tips with ISLEXPO delegates on how to turn a side hustle into a main gig.

Continuing to raise the keynote speaker bar, well-known international futurist Thimon De Jong took a close look at our relationship to AI and shared incredible examples of how technology can shape business for the better.

Festival-Like Atmosphere

Local food and drink are a staple for Revel events. During the ISLEXPO conference, the popular Garden Hub featured foodie entrepreneurs offering artisan fare while the Tipis housed craft beer tastings with beer legend Pete Brown, creative industry talks, local entrepreneur panels, a start-up pitching contest and more.

Local graffiti artist duo id-iom painted a live street art installation and interactive mural to promote the Island’s creative industries and encourage delegates to think about the Isle of Man’s offerings as a lifestyle destination. This project was in collaboration with the 2018 Year of Our Island campaign.

Live music and sunshine filled the air after 5pm with a continuation of creative industry fireside chats in the Tipis and local foodie treats and craft beers on the menu. You know it’s a Revel event when the live music kicks in.

As always, special attention was given to creating inviting spaces for serendipity to take hold. Locally roasted artisan coffee kept the buzz going indefinitely in the Caffeination Station as delegates, sponsors and partners connected, collaborated and generally just made things happen.

Founders’ Feast Opening Dinner

Revel shook things up by redesigning the opening dinner into a lively Founders’ Feast sponsored by luxury car dealership Jacksons. The bespoke hospitality event sold out in record time.

Actor, comedian and passionate Tweeter David Schneider dished out post-dinner laughs during the Founders’ Feast while guests enjoyed the best local, seasonal produce from well-known restaurateur, Phil Taylor of 14 North.

Panels, Workshops, Roundtables & Fireside Chats

Large crowds were in attendance for social media workshops with leading trainers Avocado Social and took onboard relevant information and priceless tips for social audience growth and how to create engaging social content for businesses.   

Local entrepreneurs shared their start-up experiences and provided insider knowledge about setting up a business through the Island’s Business Support Schemes.

The Futurist Floor was introduced as a new feature for ISLEXPO 2018 to target the Isle of Man Government’s objectives. Roundtables comprising industry leaders and high-profile government representatives shared in-depth discussions about the future of the Isle of Man’s economy. Topics were selected by delegates via the event app.

Delegates enjoyed a fireside chat with Emma Sinclair MBE and Manx-born documentary filmmaker Sarah Kerruish about Sarah’s Silicon Valley startup documentary General Magic.
